Kaali, our grand old lady – Julie’s mother and the grandmother of our pack, passed away on 04th June 2021 due to sudden ill health. Despite taking her to the Vet diligently on the two days when she was unwell, sadly she didn’t make it. Kaali worked her way to our hearts slowly. A senior dog, she came across as an unapproachable one with her fierce presence. But soon we broke down that shared wall. She lorded over the others and while many, including humans, kept a wary distance from her, she only had warmth in her deep brown eyes for us. Our trust in each other was implicit…. This is what these beings are like…. they trust the hand that cares for them completely.

Every evening Kaali would be sitting cross-legged & waiting on the roadside as I turned the corner of the street which was home to her. This will remain to be the lasting image of her that I will carry always. She would come and rub her face on my legs so often to get her rightful attention! She would then dance up & down as I pulled out her Dibba of rice & chicken! She loved her food and there was seldom a day when she didn’t eat her food happily! She would always be fed first and none of the other dogs would even think of going close to her feeding spot!

Since the day she left, I now leave a bowl of rice & chicken every day in the same spot where she was fed every day.

The evening before she left, when I got her back from the vet, I made her comfortable as she lay down to rest, I put some water in her mouth and held her face in my hands… our eyes met. This was the last time I looked into her deep brown eyes. She was gone the next morning, leaving me really sad.

But my dear Kaali, even though you will continue to be missed every day, I know your presence is still amongst us. Will meet as we chance upon our paths to connect, once again. RIP my friend.
